Post 5 Independent study

The side that I disagree with in the indian mascot controversy claims that the indians are offended by the mascots. Some indians are offended because they dont see the mascot as a brave and strong warrior but a racist view on them. In some professionsal sports games like the Red Skins (NFL), rivals of the Red Skins will yell out "kill the red skins" meaning beat them bad, but some indians, or other people think they mean kill the real indians. This starts a whole new side to the argument about offending the indians. People also state that blacks and asians arnt mascots so why should indians. If there is not a mascot of any other race than why should there be one of the indians. Its not fair to them and they are highly offended about this.

Independent Study 4

I think Indian mascots should be allowed because the Indian mascot is suppose to represent bravery and courage and was never meant to offend anyone. Some Indians are okay with being used as a mascot so before making a whole controversy about it they should ask the Indians what they think. In a poll asking Indians if they thought the Red Skins a NFL team based off Indians was offensive, 75 percent said no it was not offensive. Florda state universitys mascot The Seminoles was approved by both of the last Seminole tribes. The tribes said that the Indian mascot was nothing to be concerned about. I think that many non-Indians are making a big deal about it because they want to look like a hero and stand up for the Indians when they don't even know what the Indians want.

Independant study 3

Many people are arguing about the use of Indian mascots when they should just let them be allowed because I feel it is not meant to offend them and should be allowed. The mascots do are not suppose to offend the indians and are meant to be signs of brave and strong heros. If I was native american I would want to be viewed as a strong and brave hero. The dance that the redskins have done was from the lakota tribe. They liked being viewed as a strong and brave hero so why dont the others.

Independant study 2

The Pros of my topic are that the Indian is not meant to be racial it is suppose to stand for the strength and bravery of the Indians ( Colin G. Calloway). They are portrayed as heros and great warriors to reflect on the team. Some cons are that some people dont know that the Indian stood for strength and bravery so they think that it is a racial thing and made a big deal about it. The Indians don't feel like they are treated like other races such as blacks or Mexicans. The anti Indian mascot people say if there can be an Indian team than why not have a Mexican or black mascot.

Native american mascots background

Using native americans as mascots for teams and sports has been an argument since the 60's. Some people admire the bravery of the indians but others think that it is racist and not nice. It was manly noticed in the 60's when the National Congress of American Indians tried to stop the sterotypes in movies and cartoons but the sports were a big thing. Mascots of indians show their bravery, toughness, and skill not anyhitng mean about them. It is suppose to reflect on the team. What team would want a mascot showing negativity reflecting on thier team?
